This study examined the effects of boat noise pollution on the stress indices of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata, Linnaeus 1758). To assess the stress response in these fish, biometric values and plasma parameters such as ACTH, cortisol, glucose, lactate, haematocrit, Hsp70, total protein, cholesterol, triglycerides and osmolarity were analysed. Road surface analysis including pothole reports is an important problem for road maintainers and drivers. In this paper we propose a methodology for pothole detection using mobile vehicles equipped with off the shelf microphone and global positioning devices attached to an on-board computer. The approach is generic enough to be extended for other kind of event detection using different sensors as well. Background noise suppression for acoustic localization by means of an adaptive energy detection approach

A microphone array can be employed to localize dominant acoustic sources in a given noisy environment. This capability is successfully used in good signal to noise ratio (SNR) conditions but its accuracy decreases considerably in the presence of other background noise sources. In order to counteract this effect, a novel approach that combines the information provided by a Gaussian energy detector (GED) with the approved localization method SRP-PHAT is presented in this paper. To evaluate the presented technique, several acoustic sources (speech and impulsive sounds) were considered in a variety of different scenarios to demonstrate the robustness and the accuracy of the system proposed.

Abstract In flow injection analysis with thermal lens calorimetric detection, mixing of reagent streams of different composition before the detection cell produces a large background noise. The noise is due to the heterogeneity of the mixture which produces refractive changes in the probe beam direction. Procedures to measure the homogeneity of the mixture of solutions are derived, and used to evaluate and improve the mixing efficiencies of packed bead reactors. Using well-designed reactors, the mixing noise can be reduced below the noise levels due to other sources.

The photothermal spectroscopic techniques, with special emphasis on the thermal lens spectrometry (TLS), are introduced to the non-specialist in laser spectroscopy. The following topics are treated on an elementary basis: fundamentals and analytical characteristics, instrumentation, selectivity and multi-wavelength capability, the models describing the signal-concentration relationship, the sensitivity, background noise and limits of detection, the influence of light scattering and flow. Applications related to the fields of clinical and biochemical analysis and organic pollution are given. The thermal lens circular dichroism and the infrared TLS are also briefly outlined.
